Two Democratic primary presidential candidates criticized President Trump for retweeting a conspiracy theory that the Clintons played a role in the death of disgraced financial man Jeffrey Epstein.
Both New Jersey’s Sen. Cory Booker and former Texas Rep. Beto O’Rourke said Trump is trying to divide Americans and distract voters from the issue of gun violence by stirring up the conspiracy theory that Epstein didn’t commit suicide but was instead killed by someone linked to former President Bill Clinton and former State Secretary Hillary Clinton.
The medical examiner’s office in New York City announced that there was an autopsy on Sunday, with a “pending further information at this time.” conclusion.
“What he’s doing is dangerous, he’s giving light to conspiracy theorists and whipping people up to anger against different people in this country,” Booker stated during an interview with CNN. “He is using the same tactics as the Russians to attack our democracy.”
O’Rourke added to the Sunday morning talk show during a separate interview that the retweet of the president is ‘[a]nother example of Trump using his position to attack political enemies with unfounded conspiracy theories.”
“Trump is changing the conversations so we can’t focus on the real problems that he is part of,” O’Rourke added, highlighting gun violence and anti-immigrant feelings as Trump is fueling two issues through his rhetoric.
Trump retweeted a message from conservatist commentator and comedian Terrence K. Williams on Saturday.
“Died of SUICIDE on 24/7 SUICIDE WATCH?” Williams wrote. “Yeah right! How does that happen #JefferyEpstein had information on Bill Clinton & now he’s dead.”
Epstein, 66, was refused bail and faced up to 45 years behind bars on federal sex trafficking and unsealed conspiracy charges last month. He pleaded not guilty and was awaiting trial next year, but was not on suicide watch, authorities verified.
Williams also claims in a video along with the tweet that for Epstein to die by suicide, “somebody not doing their job, or somebody got paid not to do — not to do their job, so somebody can get knocked off, so information don’t come out.”

The relationships between Epstein and Trump, former President Bill Clinton and Prince Andrew of Britain are at the center of online rumors and theories, with many questioning what politicians knew about the alleged sex crimes committed by Epstein.
According to the Federal Prison Bureau, Epstein was discovered unresponsive in his cell on Saturday morning at the Metropolitan Correctional Center. Fire Officers received a call at 6:39 a.m. Epstein was in cardiac arrest on Saturday and was declared dead at the Presbyterian-Lower Manhattan Hospital in New York.
The federal inquiry into the accusations continues steadfast, U.S. Attorney Geoffrey Berman said. He observed in a declaration on Saturday that a conspiracy charge is included in the indictment against Epstein, indicating others might face charges in the case.
